Would you go into a meeting and cover your eyes or ears? Would you attend a meeting and ignore everyone in the room? It sounds absurd, but this is what you’re doing when you attend a meeting and spend time scanning your device for the latest email, tweet, or Facebook notification. What makes meetings effective (and worthwhile) is that they allow participants to engage in verbal and nonverbal communication for shared meaning.

Please Put Down the Device & Let’s Just Talk by Dave DeRuchie

Hey, we’re on Internet TV! 37signals came by our Philadelphia office during #siteweek to talk to us about Basecamp. We had a great time sharing our experiences and how Basecamp is integrated in our day-to-day process.

Our friend, Grant Hutchinson put our new site to the test with his Apple Newton:
HTML5 vs Newton: Happy Cog

The Happy Cog crew completely redesigned, rebranded, and relaunched their site in a single week. To celebrate this accomplishment, I thought I’d run it through Eckhart Köppen’s Courier browser on my 13 year old Newton MessagePad 2100. As with other sites rendered on the Newton, images are missing and there are a few character encoding issues. However, this is great example of a modern site that can be viewed and navigated on an extant browsing platform.

After reflecting upon the results, I gotta say, I’m very pleased with the new Happy Cog. From here on out we’re not treating our website as a sacred cow as we once did. It becomes too easy to second-guess new ideas and avoid any level of risk. The “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality is a mantra of slow death to creative people. In some ways Happy Cog fell victim to this, but not anymore.

We did it!

On Monday morning we came to work with little more than a new brand, a list of goals and an idea for how to publish a completely new website (running on a custom CMS) five days later. Here we are on Friday afternoon having achieved everything we set out to do. We have learned a lot this week and will be sharing everything we’ve learned in the weeks and months ahead.

Next Monday, we’ll be back to the regular work week while continuing to make enhancements to our new online home. We launched a small site in the last five days but have taken a big step in our ability to collaborate and create. You can expect to see and hear more from us in the near future.

Thank you all for following our progress and for your words of encouragement along the way. We’re going to go have a few beers now, have a lot of laughs and collapse into a deep sleep.

Have a good weekend!
